While working with a white ED attending, they mention the phenomenon of " Hispanic panic" which they describe as “they act like they’re dying but there’s nothing really wrong" who presents to the ED.
White OB nurse to resident: " I can't believe she is progressing so slowly. They usually have such smooth, fast labors." [in reference to a Latina patient.]
A white resident wants to discuss a project stating, "We'll powwow about that later."
Walking into clinic there are 2 patients behind you (an older white man and a young black woman wearing a head scarf.) They are chatting and you hear the man ask where she is from. She responds, "my parents are from Ethiopia . Where are you from?" He laughs and responds, "Oh, just here."
You overhear 2 white nurses talking in an elevator, "those Indian women are like princesses. They don't do well with pain."
White attending in a specialty clinic asks you as the resident what race a patient is, then describes how that would influence the testing approach for NASH.
A Vietnamese OB nurse says to you about your shared Latina patient, "She' ll do great. You know these Hispanic moms, they pop babies out like jelly beans."
During ICU rounds the white attending states, "she looks like a drug using patient. You know ... purple hair, marks on her arm - they might be track marks. Don't get me wrong, I know not all people with purple hair use drugs just like I know not all Native Americans are alcoholic."
Older African American patient states, "I don't want to see Dr. Chin. There are a lot of Asian doctors here and I can never understand them - all that "ching-chang" stuff. I'm not racist, it's just how I feel."
White student states, "the patient is East African so they probably won't be very good about taking their medication. We should follow-up with them sooner to check how they are doing."
